During the 60’s many events happened that affected the way people live today. One influential change happened in music with the birth of Heavy Metal. Bands started to have a deeper tone in their sound and used lyrics that were shocking. From the start of Metal, Led Zeppelin used the blues as an influence to define the sound of Metal. Black Sabbath came along to perfect styles and ideas. As Metal developed through the years, bands like Iron Maiden gave Metal darker visions. Metal has branched out to hundreds of sub-genres such as Thrash, Speed Metal, Black, Death Metal, Hardcore, and Deathcore. Heavy Metal has been one of the biggest influences in music, and it will always be around to be changed and persecuted.
The Genre
The term “Heavy Metal” came from the book “The Soft Machine” by William S. Burroughs in 1962 . Metal is a music form consisting of extreme volume, machismo, and theatricality form of music. Dark and morbid ideas gave birth to Metal. This is where the music’s unique appeal came from; it was something different. Metal involves distorted guitars and playing pounding rhythms . This came along with the distorted power-chords and based technical music styling’s . Metal has become one of the most popular forms of rock music . Many people found Metal as a way to escape from everyday life. Metal was viewed as somewhere between progressive rock and psychedelic . Inspired by horror movies and some neo-Gothic nihilism, the most extreme distortion so far for metal was created . Using this the common usual way of singing changed in to something less classical. With a negative outlook narrative song structures with simple riffs were morbid. As it grew changes were being made and new ideas were making Metal more open to different people. In the 80’s hybrid Metal started forming by combining styles. During this time Metal bands started experimenting to create sub-genres like Thrash/Speed and Death/Black Metal. Thrash bands played complex riffs at breakneck speed, often with vocal melody . After that development, black and death metal formed to make more abstract, intense, and hyper speed music. As Metal grew, the culture became a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.
